Nudging not enough

Baroness Neuberger, chair of the House of Lords Science and Technology Sub-Committee, says the Government's nudge policy won't achieve enough on its own.

She says that reliance on nudges - tweaks to processes that encourage us to take the healthy/green/good option because it is presented as the default for instance - won't achieve the big changes society needs unless used alongside policy and legislation change.

Talking on BBC Radio 4 this morning she also criticised the lack of evaluation to back up the effectiveness of 'nudge' tactics.

The committee's detailed findings on nudge tactics can be found here.

Coincides with a report just published by the Cabinet Office's Behavioural Insights Team into latest thinking and pilot roll out of nudges in the field of energy use. Nudge trials will be run in partnership with Homebase, B&Q and E.ON.
