The Grey Squirrels (Prohibition of Importation and Keeping) Order 1937, part of the Destructive Imported Animals Act 1932, makes it a criminal offence for a land owner not to notify Defra of the presence of grey squirrels.
There've been grey squirrels in my garden for years and I've never told a soul.
This archane legislation is highlighted as reasonable to withdraw as part of the UK Government's red tape challenge. To be honest though it's probably not fooling anyone, picking on squirrel rules and not mention the elephant in the room. As FoE among others point out, much more significant 'red tape' is also under review, including the Climate Change Act, which places a duty on the secretary of state for energy to ensure that net UK carbon emissions for the year 2050 are 80% lower than in 1990.
