Nudging house improvements

Adam Corner's Green Living blog reveals that the 'nudge' approach to encouraging behaviour change has informed thinking about how to make the forthcoming Green Deal a success.
Launched next year, the Green Deal will enable people to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and pay for the work out of future savings on their energy bill.
Previous, arguably more generous schemes, have not seen the widespread uptake which is necessary if the Green Deal is to make a meaningful contribution to meeting the UK’s carbon reduction targets. A well-placed colleague tweeted the other day that the "green deal has nothing anyone wants". Adam Corner's blog makes another important point, which is supported by other thinkers about behavioural policy, which is that if you nudge people to action in an unthinking way, you might not get the long term effects you seek.
Money saved on energy bills might well be spent on some other carbon-consuming endeavour.
